The grief nobody prepared you for

Infertility is a loss that the world mostly does not know how to hold.

In Tyler, the question "Do you have kids?" is practically a greeting. Baby showers, pregnancy announcements, and family conversations happen constantly in the church, at work, and at every gathering. When you are in the middle of infertility, each of these is not just uncomfortable. It can feel like a small grief that accumulates quietly until it is very heavy.

The medical side of fertility treatment is well-resourced. The psychological side rarely is. The grief of infertility: the monthly loss, the hope and collapse of each cycle, the strain it puts on your relationship, the question of what your life looks like if this does not work. None of it gets the clinical attention it deserves.

Counseling does not promise to improve your fertility outcomes. It addresses the genuine psychological weight of the experience, which deserves attention regardless of the outcome.

Infertility counseling at Willow works with individuals and couples navigating fertility challenges at any point in the process: before treatment begins, during active IVF cycles, through pregnancy loss, and in the decision-making that follows when treatment has not worked.

What you might be carrying
The Monthly Grief Cycle

Hope at the beginning of each cycle, followed by loss. Month after month. Each one individually manageable. Cumulatively exhausting in a way that is hard to explain to anyone who has not lived it.

The Weight of IVF

The physical demands of treatment, the financial pressure, the clinical language replacing what should feel personal, the hope staked on a single transfer. IVF is not just a medical procedure. It carries enormous emotional weight that the medical system is not designed to hold.

Pregnancy Loss and Recurrent Loss

Miscarriage, recurrent pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or failed cycles. Each one a real loss that the world often minimizes. The cumulative grief of repeated loss is clinically significant and deserves real clinical attention.

Secondary Infertility

You have children, so people assume this should feel less painful. It does not. Secondary infertility carries its own particular grief, often complicated by the expectation that you should feel grateful for what you already have.

Relationship Strain

Infertility puts pressure on even strong relationships. Different grieving styles, different tolerances for risk and hope, physical intimacy that becomes medicalized, and the question of how long to keep going. The stress does not stay contained to the treatment itself.

The Decision-Making Weight

When to stop treatment. Whether to pursue adoption or donor options. What a child-free life looks like. These decisions are genuinely hard and deserve a space to process them that is not your fertility clinic.

What we work on

The emotional dimensions of infertility that the medical system is not built to address.

Fertility clinics are equipped to manage the medical treatment of infertility. They are not equipped, and not designed, to hold the grief, the relational strain, or the identity questions that accompany it. That is what counseling is for.

Many fertility clinics, including those with Tyler offices, recommend psychological support as part of the treatment process, particularly before and during IVF. If your clinic has recommended counseling, or if you are seeking support on your own, Willow provides that care from a licensed professional counselor who understands the specific clinical landscape of infertility.

We work with individuals and couples, at any stage: pre-treatment, during active cycles, through loss, and in the decision-making that follows when treatment has not produced the outcome you hoped for.

Specific areas we address
Grief Processing The cumulative grief of cycles that did not work, losses that were minimized by others, and the ongoing experience of mourning a future you expected. Grief that goes unnamed and unprocessed does not resolve on its own.
Couples Communication and Grieving Styles It is common for partners to grieve differently: one tends toward fixing, the other toward feeling. Understanding each other's patterns allows partners to support each other rather than add to each other's load.
Anxiety During Treatment The anxiety of waiting, of each test and result, of whether to hold hope or protect yourself from it. Building specific skills for managing that anxiety so it does not dominate every waking thought.
Identity and Worthiness When the ability to have children feels tied to identity and worth, infertility strikes at both. Untangling those connections clinically is different from knowing intellectually that your worth is not your fertility.
Navigating Social Situations Pregnancy announcements, baby showers, the "Do you have kids?" question, family gatherings. Building responses and boundaries that protect your emotional capacity without isolating you from the people you care about.
Decision-Making Support When to stop treatment, whether to explore adoption or donor options, what a child-free life would look like. These decisions deserve a clinical space separate from the pressure of the treatment process itself.
How we work

High empathy. Clinical structure. Not just a space to cry.

Infertility counseling at Willow is not open-ended grief support without direction. Sessions have structure. We map what you are actually carrying, identify where the psychological weight is most acute, and build specific tools for managing it.

The pace follows yours. Infertility is not a linear process, and neither is the counseling that accompanies it. Some sessions will be heavier than others depending on where you are in the treatment cycle. We work with that reality rather than imposing a predetermined arc.

Telehealth is available for all infertility counseling services. For couples where partners are in different locations for work, or for clients who are actively mid-cycle and managing physical demands, telehealth removes the logistical barrier without removing any of the clinical quality.

What we use
Grief-Informed Therapy Drawing on grief-specific clinical frameworks for the particular losses of infertility, which are real losses even when nothing has physically died.
Gottman Method for Couples Addressing the relational strain of infertility using the Gottman framework: understanding each partner's grieving style, rebuilding the emotional connection that treatment can erode, and creating space for both people to be held.
EMDR for Pregnancy Loss and Traumatic Events Where pregnancy loss or specific events during treatment have produced traumatic responses, EMDR can reach the stored experience in a way that talk alone often cannot.
Anxiety and Cognitive Work Specific tools for the waiting, the uncertainty, and the anxiety of each phase of treatment. Building the capacity to hold hope and fear simultaneously without being consumed by either.
Common questions

What to know about infertility counseling at Willow

Yes. It is very common for one partner to be the fixer and the other to be the feeler. This often leads to conflict, distance, or both feeling unsupported by the other. Counseling helps partners understand each other's grieving styles so they can support each other rather than drifting apart. Infertility puts significant strain on relationships. Addressing that strain clinically is not a sign the relationship is failing. It is a sign you are taking it seriously.

No. This is one of the most painful myths about infertility. Infertility is a medical condition, and stress reduction does not reliably resolve it. This advice, however well-intentioned, adds a layer of blame to an already difficult experience: if you are not getting pregnant, it must be because you are not relaxed enough. Counseling does not promise to improve fertility outcomes. It addresses the genuine psychological weight of the experience, which deserves attention regardless of outcome.

No. Infertility counseling is available for individuals navigating fertility challenges alone, including single parents by choice and people whose partners are not ready or able to participate in counseling. Individual work on grief, identity, and decision-making around fertility is legitimate and valuable regardless of whether your partner is in the room.

Yes. Miscarriage, recurrent pregnancy loss, stillbirth, and failed IVF cycles all carry grief that is often minimized by others and undersupported by the medical system. This grief is real and deserves clinical attention. Counseling for pregnancy loss addresses both the acute grief of each loss and the cumulative weight that builds across multiple losses.

Yes. Many fertility clinics recommend or require psychological support as part of the IVF process, particularly for third-party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, surrogacy). Willow provides that support from a licensed professional counselor. An intake call is the clearest way to confirm whether the approach here meets what your clinic is looking for.

Yes. All infertility counseling services are available via secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Texas. Telehealth is often particularly practical for clients who are mid-cycle and managing the physical demands of treatment, or for couples where partners are in different locations. The clinical depth and approach are identical to in-person sessions.

Willow Counseling Center is a private-pay practice. We can provide a superbill for clients who wish to seek reimbursement through their out-of-network insurance benefits.

You do not have to carry the weight of this alone.
